Frequently asked questions
It can feel quite daunting signing up to anything new, especially therapy - so here are answers to some of the questions you are likely to have before you can decide if this is for you.
I want this process to be as transparent and easy for you as possible, so if you can’t see the answer to your question here, send me a message.
-
Firstly, I’d suggest having a read of this helpful article, as well as sending me your questions. I can also give you some more information about locations and kit.
I offer a free introductory phone call (15 minutes) as an opportunity for you to ask questions and find out more, and I can give you an honest opinion about whether this seems a good fit for you.
Having a call doesn’t in any way mean that you need to work with me, but if you want to go ahead from there, we’ll start with a questionnaire and initial online session to make sure that we’ve thought everything through before we get started outside.
-
You don’t need any specialist kit but it is essential to wear appropriate footwear (with good grip and that will keep your feet warm and dry), an outdoor jacket (ideally waterproof and with a hood) and have a rucksack for extra warm layers, a drink and snack. You might like to bring a notebook and pen for recording any insights.
-
After our initial session online where we go through the counselling agreement, your preferences and your goals, we’ll meet for our first session outdoors. This one will be an introduction to the space and building a connection with the nature around us.
I will keep track of the time, staying within our agreed area and aware of any hazards, whilst you explore physically and mentally!
Nature can come into it in multiple ways - a grounding presence, soothing stress or using it as a metaphor to make sense of something in your life. You’ll discover for yourself what it offers you!
-
Feel free to send me a message if you’re unsure whether this is right for you.
And also remember that these sessions will be tailored to you - we’ll discuss location, accessibility, preferences before we get started - in the initial questionnaire and during an online meeting together. We’ll create a working agreement that suits us both.
-
That is completely up to you! One of the key features of outdoor therapy is that you are in charge of the route (unless you don’t want to be of course!), how far and how fast we go. And if you want to sit down the whole hour, that’s fine too!
-
Bad weather won’t automatically stop us going out - if it’s raining or windy and you are equipped and keen to go out, we can! We might adjust the location to have more shelter, but it doesn’t have to stop us - sometimes being out in wild weather can be therapeutic in itself!
But, sometimes, you might not be feeling up to battling the elements or I might assess them as too dangerous (e.g., snow or ice), in which case we can meet online instead. I’ll always check the weather forecast 24-hours before our session, at which point we can decide to move it online if we need to.
-
See ‘what do I need?’ for the footwear and clothing I suggest.
You don’t need to prepare anything for the 1st session, but some people like to write things down to prompt them e.g., any questions about how sessions work, goals that you have for therapy. I’ll also be sending you a questionnaire which might prompt you to get thinking about what you want from it.
-
It goes without saying that we will likely always (how likely depends on the location) pass other people during our sessions, sometimes they may have a dog or want to chat. Everyone has different needs around this so we will discuss this, and confidentiality, in our initial online session.
-
I conduct a thorough risk assessment (which I am happy to share) in order to minimise the chance of any injuries or accidents. I will request emergency contact details and medical information from you before we start, and I am Outdoor First Aid trained. We won’t work in any remote locations so there will always be help close at hand if needed.
-
I am currently available for sessions on Tuesdays afternoon/evening and Thursday morning.
Most of my clients prefer to keep the same time slot each week, but this isn’t essential and I try to be flexible to your schedule as much as possible.

To book a session, you can contact me with your availability and a brief summary of what has brought you here.
We can start with a free introductory phone call (15 minutes) to decide if we are the right fit.
If you want to go ahead after that, we’ll find a time that suits us both for our first session.
I will email you our counselling agreement to read before the session, and send you the meeting link just before the session starts.
-
If you need to cancel a session, I ask that you do this more than 48-hours in advance, otherwise you will usually need to pay the full cost of the cancelled session.
-
Send me your question and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
